JAPAN FACT: The samurai practiced Seppuku (切腹 cut belly) a ritual suicide as atonement for a fault or as a means to escape from a dishonorable death at the hands of enemies. Because it was thought that the belly was the seat of the soul, and therefore the symbolic meaning was to show his soul to the onlookers blameless in all its purity.
