JAPAN FACT: in Japan on July 7th is Tanabata Matsuri 七夕 祭り (Festival of Stars):

This is the most romantic of summer festivals. According to an ancient parchment, would be the only day in which two stars in love “Vega” and “Altair” can meet along the Milky Way.
The legend says that Orihime (Vega), daughter of Emperor of Heaven, had always woven fabrics for the clothes of celestial deities. When he met the pastor Hikoboshi (Altair) the girl forgot all duty and surrendered completely to love. The gods went to furious protest at the Heavenly Emperor, who decided that the two lovers would be able to meet one night a year, on the bridge of the Milky Way, only if the sky was clear. On that night that night, flocks of birds in flight reach the Milky Way, forming a bridge with their wings so that the two lovers can walk the two opposite shores of Heaven and reunite.
So it was that the ladies of ancient Japan, to propitiate the good weather, began to write poems and cards to hang in the branches of bamboo, believing that it would be fulfilled. For the same reason kids and adults still hanging, the same branches, colorful tickets and confidently express their desires.
